Solid Silicone (HTV)
High-Temperature Vulcanizing silicone — the workhorse of the silicone family. Excellent for compression-molded parts across industrial, food, and automotive applications.
HTV Solid Silicone Overview
Also called: Heat-Cured Silicone, High-Temperature Vulcanizing Silicone, VMQ. Solid silicone is compression-molded from gum-stock preforms and cured under heat and pressure. It is the most cost-effective silicone processing method for low-to-medium volumes and larger parts.
Key Properties
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Shore A Hardness | 10 – 80 Shore A |
| Operating Temp. Range | -60°C to +230°C (300°C intermittent) |
| Tensile Strength | 7 – 12 MPa |
| Elongation at Break | 200 – 600% |
| Color Options | Any Pantone / RAL |
| Shrink Rate (Compression Mold) | 1.5 – 3% |
Common Grades
- General Purpose: Standard VMQ, good balance of properties, cost-effective.
- High-Strength: Tensile >10 MPa, for dynamic seals and high-stress parts.
- High-Temperature: Stable to 300°C intermittent, for industrial ovens and automotive.
- Low Compression Set: For sealing applications requiring long-term elastic recovery.
- FDA / Food-Grade: Complies with 21 CFR 177.2600, odorless, non-toxic.
- Flame Retardant: UL 94 V-0 rated, low smoke toxicity (railway/aircraft).
- Conductive / ESD: Carbon- or silver-filled, surface resistivity 10^2 – 10^6 Ω/sq.
Typical Applications
- Industrial seals & gaskets
- Food-processing equipment seals (FDA)
- Automotive sensors & lighting seals
- HVAC gaskets
- Consumer bakeware (food-grade)
